Thank you
Hi Kylie, how lovely to take the time out to answer the many emails you must have received. My strength has not faltered although somewhat shaken by the news we received yesterday, Leandra (my daughter) cancer is in a part of the lung that is to close to the heart and major arteries and is inoperable. We gathered strength today only because she rung as all to make sure we were alright and told us she was sorry she is putting us through so much pain. She has been no saint in her life and battled many demons, in the last five years she managed to turn her life around, meet a wonderful man (italian, with a huge hugging type family and that damn kiss on both cheeks!!), win her two children back and has won back the respect of everybody. Her wonderful partner John works in the mines at Newman and she and her 11 year old son were to join him at Christmas, her beautiful 19 year old daughter is at uni in Curtain W.A. studying Science. Life was ready to take off, Lea had paid her dues. Her story is mammoth and I will tell it all one day, as my tribute to her courage and strength.
I should not be off loading to you, I have so much admiration for you and I always wonder and am inspired by the ability of ordinary people being able to accomplish extraordinary things. I told my daughter about you and when I get to W.A. we would like to keep in touch, if that is okay. My sister who has just finished her radiation treatment for breast cancer has an appt. with her oncologist soon, is the same one who joined you in the desert??
Kylie none of us have given up hope and I will not leave a stone left unturned until there are no more stones on this earth. Thank you again so much, if there is anything I can do, now or in the future I will.
Regards and best wishes,
Helen Stebbing

It is also very hard on me to watch my husband being sick from the chemo and then to get a negative result.

Chicago Marathon
I tried to register for the Chicago Marathon today only to find out registration is closed. I called Lisa who was listed for Lungevity as a contact for a possible slot on the team. I have been an advocate for lung cancer for the past 6 years. I have lost my Mom and my Brother to lung cancer. As a result, I have done volunteer work for the Cancer Center here in Tucson. I have been instrumental in forming the only lung cancer support group in Arizona which has been meeting for the past 5 years. I have also been on a team for 5 years for the Tucson l/2 marathon raising money for the cancer center and have also been on a team for the Lung Cancer Alliance raising money and participating in the San Francisco Marathon. I will do whatever I can to be considered for a slot on the team for Lungevity. Thank you. Hoping to hear back from you soon, Lynn Johnson
Wishing you all the best
Message of the day June 16)
Dear Kylie & Nick
I have just returned home from a holiday with my 2 children aged 9 and 7 in Canada to hear of your journey and am happy to be donating to your cause.
My 43 year old wife died January 2005 as a result of Lung Cancer that was diagnosed in Aug 2003 as a result of having a sore leg after a game of netball. She had a dvt and the tumour was discovered. Unfortunately the chemo and radiotherapy never seemed to shrink the growth and while she lead a normal life as possible, continued working and breezed through the treatment with a positive attitude the cancer spread into the brain and spine with the ultimate result. She was a non smoker. You are so right the trendy cancers are the ones that seemingly get all the attention and lung cancer has the stigma of being attached to smoking.
Life does change when cancer is diagnosed for not only the sufferer but all those around and you find out who your friends really are. My biggest feeling was of helplessness and not knowing what to do that could really help Sandy - the best thing I could do was shave my head as a fund raiser for the local cancer council - it made me feel a bit better but I still felt pretty helpless.
Good luck with all your efforts and your journey do much to raise awareness. Be at peace with yourself and make the most of what you have.
Certainly attitudes to the world around us (and all the blatant consumerism) change when confronted by such a change.
Wishing you all the best.

I haven’t seen your own parents for a while I hope they are well. We went to Suzies on Sat night for her birthday it was nice. The years really are rolling on now I cant believe we are nearly 40 - I said to Robbie I remember visiting Suze at your home in Epuni St when you were still at primary school and in your jammies on the floor doing homework - it really doesnt seem that long ago but now you are gorgeous and married to a wonderful guy ( I hear ). Best of luck my dear. I will be watching your progress. I now have tears in my eyes and mascara starting to run so I'd better dash.

Message of the day June 13) Hi Kylie.
What is the meaning of out lives

Brave and courageous
My name is Joanna I am a friend of Susan. I have bowel cancer and like you do not "fit" the so-called criteria for bowel cancer. I am a female, 10 years too young and do not have a family history of it !!! People say I am brave, but you are the epitomy of being brave and courageous !! Your positive outlook is an inspiration to me, and as you know, the positive stories we hear are the ones that drive us to keep fighting our battle. I have 2 young children and an amazing husband, family and group of friends who all keep me going !! Even though I have only met you maybe once? I feel so, so proud of you ! Love Joanna
Well done
Hi Kylie how are you? Great news to hear what you are doing and hope you are having a ball?
I too have lung cancer (stage 4 Adenocarcinoma with BAC features) at age 30 and never smoked, diagnosed late last year and living very well at present with no symptoms, fingers crossed. Only treatment I have had is Tarceva but my genetics dont match up and will find out next week if it is working...
I am very happy about what you are doing and if you need additional support please contact me. The message needs to get out that there are many non-smokers with the disease!!
Cheers
Matt

You are an inspiration
(Message of the day June 9)
Kylie,
I know I am repeating a million times what you have heard, but again you are an inspiration. I am the Function Manager at North lakes Resort Golf Club near Brisbane. I hold ladies workshops to encourage women to get outside the box they are in. Can you suggest a person in your organization around my area who might come to one of these days and discuss lung cancer with these women to educate them more (particularly as all new smoking laws are being introduced). I will donate proceeds from the day to your organization, if this can be arranged. If not all the best and my husband and I shall forward a donation ourselves. Kind regards and best wishes
Kerry

Wonderful mission
Hi Gorgeous Kylie and Nick,
welcome home. Hope you have had a good nights sleep. Look forward to your latest diary entry and talking to you in person or by phone at least. Congratulations on a wonderful mission. People all around the world have been captivated by your courage, humour, and by your generosity in sharing your heart. A huge thank you for your stand. I love you Robbie
Thank you
Kylie - What a sweetie you are to have written back. Not expected at
all. Donation made - you're NOT doing this in vain. And I know how
much those patients' groups make all the difference. My own "Bosom
Buddies" group from 4 years ago is still meeting informally every
month or so, and we are brilliant friends - actually, I couldn't do
without them.
Way to go, honey.

Well done Kylie (& Nick too)....
You are an inspiration to us all. Looking forward to reading all about your last day and hope you had a good sleep last night.

Amazing feat
(message of the day June 6)
I received your web page link through a friend who is undergoing treatment for lung cancer. She told me to click on & read more about it. I'm not sure where you are up to on the Simpson Desert Challenge, but hopefully you're back on dry land & congratulating yourself on a wonderful journey. I hope you're on your way to achieving what you set out for. I think it's an amazing feat to overcome this illness. I hope & pray my girlfriend - who has a 12 month old baby girl - will live to see more of her daughters birthdays & more of her own. She is about to begin another round of chemo on June 5th - but she did have some good news with her oncologist telling her the tumour on her lungs had shrunk. All we can do is hope & thank the universe that she is responding well & feeling better - despite this bloody thing attaching itself uninvited to her lungs. Good luck Kylie on all your adventures. I will follow & listen out on your progress.

you have to give it a go in order to know
Hi Nick and Kylie
Nearly at the destination. Its been a fantastic journey so far. Heard another great quote,"you have to give it a go in order to know." All of what you have learned on the journey and shared with us all is really an inspiration. Good on you for giving it a go. We love you

Hey guys,
great to see how your going, got the fright of my life hearing your name on sunrise the one morning in the year that I have watched it. Mum is so funny, she tells me "kylie is going for a balloon ride", and then you’re on TV!!

Had actually tried sending you an email Kylie a couple of weeks ago through Old friends website, didn't know whether or not you got it, but I had been hounding mum for ages to get me your email and website. Never believed what I found!! Have a great trip, you have made my week (and the hurricanes and warriors winning and hopefully the Qld state of origin) but how awesome are you!
Best of luck!

Patient Support
(message of the day June 3)
Dear Kylie,
I would really like to set upa patient support group in our town. I'm
not sure about numbers of people who would be interested in the support but I am willing to give it a go.As you can imagine in small towns there is a lot of fund raising that happens. We have a population of about 5000 but we also have other small towns within 10 - 15minutes away. I have heard the saying about Gerringong as ( the town of raffles! ) I'm not sure if i mentioned that my sister had non smoking lung cancer & I know that the support she received although was wonderful, it was the group support that was hard to access. I would really like to help as your flight & idea behind the balloon
was inspirational.
Yours sincerely,
Karen Trevenar
Amazing
Hello Kylie and Nick, Have just loved following your journey and
congratulations to you both on what you have achieved. Just hope you
consider putting all that is on this web site into book form and
selling it for lungevity - don't bother altering it at all. It is just
magic. Love
John and Heather who are still green with envy!!!!
Truly inspirational
Hi Kylie,
You are truly inspirational. I'm so pleased to see someone raising
awareness of the lack of funding for lung cancer care and research.
I've been watching sunrise in the mornings to track your progress. I will certainly be making a donation! Cheers

Fantastic
Hello Kylie,
I have heard all about you from your wonderful father in law while we wander the fairways of Shandon each Saturday morning. Hi Nick you rat bag. So nice to be able to read your stories and look at photos of your adventure. Fantastic.

THANK YOU for giving lung cancer a voice
(message of the day May 30)
Dear Kylie
I wrote to you before you started your challenge, but just wanted to send my congratulations now that you have finished!! And to thank you again for raising awareness about lung cancer. As I mentioned before, my Mum died last year, and we have been lobbying our Cancer Council to do something about lung cancer awareness, but have not had any luck. They would not even acknowledge Lung Cancer Awareness Day on their website - indeed, they didn't even know there WAS a lung cancer awareness day!
So THANK YOU for giving this illness a face and a voice - you ARE making a difference, and it means the world to those of us who have been touched by this disease.
All the best,
Karen
